July 26 Event Report

Report submitted by Kirsten Rohrbach, Creek Steward

Two different community groups from Mars Hill Church participated in the July work party at the Thistle Street Green Space. We divided into two working groups. Half the group worked on clearing a section of bioswale between the Legacy Trail and where Longfellow Creek daylights. This bioswale (a shallow ditch with gently sloping sides, lined with vegetation) will help to slow stormwater runoff entering the creek during periods of heavy winter flow. We will mulch the bioswale in August and plant it sometime during the fall.

The second working group continued blackberry removal in a wetland area east of the Legacy Trail. Native plants will be added to the cleared areas in the fall.

After a lunch break, the groups switched places for a change of pace.

Thanks, Mars Hill, for all you accomplished!
